Getting chips or cracks in your San Bernardino auto glass is a normal occurrence for most drivers. It can happen in a range of different ways. No matter how it happens, they are always a real pain to deal with. You not need to have it fixed immediately which will cost you money and waste some of your time. None of these things are good. Sometimes, you just simply cannot find the time to fix a chip or crack immediately though. If you are unable to get the chip fixed in a timely manner, there are a few things you should do. All of the following things are easy to do and will help the chip from turning into a major crack. And once the chip has turned into a crack, it will just cost you most money and it may mean you have to completely replace the auto glass rather than just getting a repair.

  • Try covering the chip with a small piece of clear plastic tape. This sounds a little strange, but this will help keep out any moisture or dirt. Both of these things can cause the chip to expand and eventually crack.
  • Try not using the defroster as much as you can. If you absolutely must use it, make sure to use the lowest setting. Putting hot temperatures on cold class will instantly make it expand which will expand any chip you may already have on the auto glass.
  • Try parking in a shaded area rather than open to the sun. You should also crack your side windows just a little bit. By doing this, you will keep heat from building up in your car which will also make the glass expand.
  • Do not use anything to try sealing the chip yourself unless you have purchased a do it yourself kit from a hardware store. These extra liquids you may try will just make it harder for a professional to fix it properly. It may also make your chip much more noticeable than it originally was.
  • Do not wash your car! The pressure alone from the hose will make the chip grow in size. Also, the temperature difference between the water and the auto glass may cause the chip to grow or to start to crack out.
  • Try not to slam the doors, trunk or hood of your vehicle. All of these things will cause the car to vibrate. These vibrations will go through your auto glass and may cause the chip to grow and crack.

As you can see, there are a few things you can do to lengthen the time from when the chip occurs to when you actually get it repaired. Hopefully all of this information has helped you. We know that finding the time to fix something like this is a hassle and these little tricks can help you out a little bit.
